As the title of this Substack suggests - I am unsophisticated. I am not referring to knowing the proper etiquette for stirring one’s tea or what fork to use for the salad (the smaller). Nor does it mean that I lack the understanding of what is necessary to become more sophisticated. What it tends to reflect is my contentment in not creating unnecessary complexity.
Reciprocal connectivity, or interconnectedness, is a concept often used in systems. It has also become a hallmark of modern media. Most modern (what a limiting word) media systems involve an interconnectedness between the delivery system and the clients.
There is a fundamental axiom in systems thinking commonly stated as the KIS principle which stands for "Keep It Simple.” You’ll also find a wide variety of additional terms for a trailing S on the acronym which I’ll leave to your imagination. The point to this is painfully obvious, but frequently lost. With additional complexity comes dependency, dependencies create opportunities for failure. Failures are undesirable - Debating this can be a future topic.
Generally then, one should work to minimize these opportunities for failure while meeting the requirements of the system of consideration. Like I said, seems obvious, but you’d be surprised how often this is not well understood. If you’ve read this far, thank you - I’ll get to my current point.
The point is, I avoid the modern trend to programmatically inter-connect apps, services, or narration platforms aka social networks. I am going to try something different - Since this substack effort grew out of my most recent social effort on LinkedIn with the point my writing here to be read, thus availing me to a diversity of perspectives and ideas I have decided to cross-post, sometimes. In doing so I will be curious to see how views and interactions differ between Substack and LinkedIn overtime.
Meanwhile, while I am sure there is an app or service that could auto-magically cross-post, provide real-time KPIs, and maybe even connect to the kettle to ensure I had a proper cuppa… Yeah, that’s not going to happen.
